The Soviets took and early lead in the Space Race with Sputnik, the first man made satellite and Laika the first dog in space, albeit one-way. Several launches were made with dogs, to pave the way for human spaceflight and Belka and Strelka successfully returned to Earth. The rocket was top secret so Konstantin Ivanov, the poster designer, had only the dogs to go by. The image of a strong factory worker embracing a stylised rocket baring hammer and sickle celebrate the latest red star success.
